Mr. Snowman gets tangled up and an IF entry

snowman coloring page copyright 2011 Wendy MartinWe had a wonderful and relaxing holiday weekend. I hope you did the same.

It started off with an artist date with my husband. We went to see the Da’Vinci Machines exhibit downtown. I’ve always loved the drawing and line art of the master. This exhibit took his many sketches of machines, and created scale models of them. There were 50 models, some you could even try out to see how they functioned. Local peeps, if you can get to downtown St. Louis, the showing has been extended until mid Dec. http://www.davinciexhibitstl.com/

After a yummy lunch, we headed back home. The afternoon activity was the actual sale (finally) of the house which was hoarder haven. 14 months of non-stop cleaning have finally, FINALLY come to an end. We couldn’t be happier to have that chore off our list.

I baked a mountain of cookies, a spice cake and a large batch of my cranberry relish. I hope you had a chance to try the recipe. Did you like it? It’s one of my husband’s favorites.

Today, the last of the turkey is in the crock pot with veggies and rice. A nice thick soup is just what we need for the chilly weather that has settled in. The temp has been dropping steadily all week. It looks as if snow isn’t too far off.

Speaking of snow, this week’s coloring page is a roley poley snowman. He’s managed to get himself into quite a tangle trying to decorate for the December holidays.

What is the difference between Art Nouveau and Art Deco?

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

If you’ve visited my home page (http://wendymartinillustration.com) you’ll see me describe my illustration as having an Art Nouveau flair. I’ve gotten several comments asking how to tell the difference between Art Nouveau and other art, such as the following period, Art Deco style.

This video does a nice job of explaining the differences of the two styles. http://youtu.be/2_4j2WPzSKU

Picture Book Month – celebrating literacy with early reading

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Join founders Dianne De Las Casas, Elizabeth O. Dulemba, Katie Davis, Tara Lazar, Wendy Martin Illustration & more in celebrating Picture Book Month! Peek from Dianne: “Picture books celebrate childhood. They speak universal truths and help children better understand the world around them. They are often a child’s first exposure to fine art and poetic language.”

Picture Book Month logoYes, I’m one of the founders. That’s what happens when you speak up for something you feel strongly about on Twitter. You get drafted before you even know it.

Picture Book Month is the result of a Twitter brainstorm with the above people and others speaking their minds on how the picture book needs some love. After the ill-conceived NY Times article declaring the picture book dead, authors and illustrators talked back. The print picture book is not dead, is very much alive and vital and a needed tool in helping children on their road to literacy.

Picture books teach many things beyond the story in their pages. They also help to form lasting and loving bonds between parent and child.

Find out more about the founders who are interviewed in a pod cast here.

Visit the Picture Book Month web site for daily blogs from picture book authors and ilustrators from around the world. (Suzanne Bloom, Denise Fleming, Leslie Helakoski, Eric A. Kimmel, Tammi Sauer, Dan Yaccarino, and Jane Yolen to name a few) On the web site you can also download images and activity sheets, a cool calendar, and if you are so inclined become a supporter. Tell your child’s school, you local library and indie bookseller. There’s plenty of room for everybody to climb on board to celebrate.

Read * Share * Celebrate!

Happy Halloween!

Monday, October 31st, 2011

free coloring page copyright 2011 Wendy Martin

The last day of October. Ghosts and goblins galore will flood the streets tonight. Except in part of the Northeast where they are buried in snow and are dealing with downed lines and fallen trees. Please take a moment to send some ‘back to normal soon’ thoughts their way.

Here’s a Day of The Dead altar to color. Add your own fruits and vegetables for your ancestors.

To download a high res picture to color just click on the image.

Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone!
