daily doodle for August 5, 2010You’ve heard of dwarf goats I’m sure. But what about teacup goats? This miniature beasty is perfect for the garden apartment.

Over on my Facebook fan page, I asked my fans if they wanted a naughty or nice goat. It was a unanimous vote for naughty goat. Not sure how naughty this little fellow can be. He’s only 4.3 inches at the shoulder.

This is about as much as I was able to accomplish today. My mother-in-law’s dog is sick. And Mom doesn’t drive, in fact she can barely walk. So I got to play chauffeur to the dog today. I took her from one vet office to the next and then back to the house. Still don’t know what is wrong with the dog, but the poor thing was happy enough to be home that there was actual tail wagging for the fist time in days.

Second vet will confer with first vet and call mom in the morning. Mom will then call me and tell me where to take the dog. So in all likelihood I won’t be getting much accomplished tomorrow either. At least I have the drum circle tomorrow night to look forward to. Probably a good thing as I really want to hit something about now.

These goats are brought to you by the numbers 3 and 4. I finally have a good grasp on goat anatomy and decided to have some fun with these two.

Today was the day my first official blog post for the middle-grade group blog went live. I haven’t had a chance to go over and check the comments yet, but I did get an email from one of the author/artists whose book I mentioned. If you are interested in how graphic novels are being used to promote literacy in the classroom, head on over to From the Mixed-Up Files of Middle-Grade Authors. I am at the end of the rotation, so there are a few dozen other articles there as well. I am truly honored to be among the people of this group and I hope I can live up to the very high standards they are setting.

In other news, my brother-in-law is in town for a few days.

Smoky and the feast of mabon coverSmoky and the Feast of Mabon officially releases in 17 days. I attempted to find a cool count down widget but the search kept being put on hold when more pressing projects came up. Any who, the book is available now from the publisher and on amazon. Please help support me and my fellow creator, author of the book, Catherynne M. Valente. If you already have a copy, THANK YOU. Really, I mean it. If you don’t have kids or can’t buy the book for whatever reason, please ask your local librarians to purchase it for their collection.

daily doodle for August 2, 2010I am still working on goats. Doing them from memory and in ink with no possibility to erase mistakes is still a bit challenging. But I guess it would be called the daily doodle challenge if it were easy.

I have been working diligently on the ‘real’ goats for a promotional postcard I want to send out before September. The struggle there is with some perspective issues. But I am still on the pencil/planning stages, so it’s only a matter of time.

Speaking of time, I sketched this little guy while waiting in the doctor’s office with my daughter. The office was like Grand Central with all the people walking in and out of the exam room! I think there were a total of 5 different folks.

Things went well there. The kid won’t have to see this particular doctor again for a year. (If mumsy can actually remember to schedule an appointment in the summer of 2011. Just saying.)

I took Saturday off. Well, sort of. I spent the first half of the day in intensive training for my position as a CASA learning on the needs and issues surrounding foster children who are about to ‘age out’ of the system. Missouri kids are a bit luckier than others since they can stay in care up until age 21. Some states only provide care until the teens turn 18. Then they are on their own. Literally. It’s heartbreaking. I know the teens in my own extended family count on their parents and other relatives long past their early 20s.

After the training, I took the rest of the day to play at a fabric store. A real one with racks upon racks of bolts of fabrics of all kinds. I only left because the store was closing and they were kicking us out.

I finally have the remaining pieces for the steampunk outfit I am concocting. And a few other things besides. When I got home that evening I jumped right into my first project. I made a padded drum case and strap for my lion ashiko. It’s a matching purple and I am quite pleased with the final creation. I’ll post a picture as soon as the timing and weather cooperate, the light inside just doesn’t do the fabric justice.

daily doodle for July 23, 2010Illustration Friday prompt for this week is ‘double.’ In keeping with the goat theme of the last few sketches, I offer up two goats. Because double the goat is double the fun.

Remember the rule for the daily doodle challenge is each day’s doodle must be done in ink, no erasing and be complete in 30 minutes or less.

I am more pleased with my goats then previously. I think it’s time to pick up the pencil and start scribbling pirate ideas down.

Later on today I will have to buckle down and write my article on graphic novels in the classroom which will be my first post (Aug 4) on the middle-grade group blog I belong to. From the Mixed-Up Files of Middle-Grade Authors launched about a month ago and almost immediately made news in the kid lit industry. The latest news to report is the blog being picked up as a feature link on Scholastic Book Club‘s Facebook fan page. With all this scrutiny from Big Name people in the industry, the pressure is on me to come up with a stellar entry for my debut post. Talk about stress!

daily doodle for July 22, 2010 I am still working on goats. I think this fellow is much goatier than the last few. I will continue to goatify my brain with more sketching and research.

In other news, the non-fiction book with The Agent (TA) has been through several rounds of revisions and Agent felt it was ready to submit to publishers. I received an email list of the publishers TA has selected for the first round on Tuesday morning.

I realize it will be a while before we hear anything, but the thumb nibbling and wanting to check email every half hour has started to eat in the back of my brain. I haven’t succumbed yet. Give me a couple of weeks, maybe a month.

I have other fish to fry at the moment. My newest picture book, Smoky and the Feast of Mabon, is due for release on August 21. That is less than a month away and I have no book launch plans. Summer is always such a weird time to have a book launch since school is out and most families are in the midst of their annual vacations or hiding out in the AC away from the heat. Maybe a party in September on the Mabon holiday would be better. Anyone want to host a book launch party?

I am also preparing a new picture book for an agent search. This one will need to be made into dummy format before submitting because the main character is an inanimate object and the illustrations tell more than half the story. I really believe the whole picture (pun intended) will be better understood with both text and illustrations.

My other work in progress is an upper middle-grade novel. This one is still in the birthing process, but the characters are looking over my shoulder while I work on other, more pressing things, and demanding to know when their turn will be. They are almost as annoying as the cat asking me why it’s way past dinner time and why is there no food in his bowl?

The studio purge and organize is going well. There are actually long expanses of uncluttered horizontal spaces. It looks surprisingly spacious in here now. I still need to tackle the file drawers and get rid of things that are no longer relevant. (Like first drafts of books already published.) I am putting off this task because it will be a bear. I file things haphazardly, in no particular order. I will need to organize as I purge, something I really am not looking forward to doing. Must be my artsy side rebelling against structure and order. But if I am going to have any hope of keeping track of submissions and licensees, I am going to need to be ORGANIZED. I will need to be able to open a file drawer and find the item I am looking for without:

  • Getting distracted by something shiny
  • Giving up in frustration because I can’t find what I am looking for
  • Putting off a project because I have no earthly idea where my research is.

Time to draw more goats…till next time!
