The flooding in Tennessee has been weighing heavy on my mind. I guess it’s because I am close to several people who live there. Thankfully they are all fine as well as their homes and families, but other people I know through them have not fared so well. Once of these people is also a friend on live journal, so I am reading her blow by blow account of her losses.
Millington is a 5-6 hour drive from here. It’s a cozy little town near Memphis. I haven’t heard it mentioned specifically on the evening news, but t town is among the ones devistated by last weekends torrential rains and flooding.
One of the things that really upsets me is hearing about the looting. These poor families have lost everything. What little they have been able to salvage is being subject to looting. A few wicked, selfish people, instead of helping the victims in their time of need are helping themselves to the victims’ remaining belongings. And not little bits and bobs either, but things like cars and boats and couches.
I am so far away I can’t help in a more immediate way than sending a donation or something like that. Several writer friends have begun a campaign to collect things and money here: dothewritethingfornashville.blogspot.com/ They have been amazed with the outpouring from around the world. Still, I wanted to do something for the friend in Millington. Something no one else would think to do. I think I hit on the perfect thing, but I want it to be a surprise. She needs a good surprise right about now.
Meanwhile, I am counting my blessings. Even though both my husband and I were traveling through the torrential storms in areas north of Tennessee, neither of us suffered more than a good soaking. We are home, safe and dry.
