Green-eyed Sue – New portfolio piece

Green-Eyed SueS. J. Tucker, the musician and author of my book “Rabbit’s Song,” is an amazing story-teller with a voice that belies her diminutive stature. She has a trilogy of songs retelling the chapter of Peter Pan in which the pirates of Neverland capture Wendy Darling.

In her version, Wendy is a fierce and brave tom boy. She manages to beat the nasty Captain Hook at his own game and take over the ship. She then does Peter one better, crewing her vessel with the Lost Girls.

In the last part of the trilogy, Wendy decides she’s had enough of pirating and wants to go home. She invites the girls on the crew to join her. Her first mate, Green-Eyed Sue, refuses and remains in Neverland.

Green-Eyed Sue has always fascinated me. I’ve been scribbling her on and off for years until recently, when she demanded (yes, my art talks to me) to be finished.

Here she is in all her fierce glory. The newest Captain of the Neverland pirate ship, Green-Eyed Sue!

The passage of the song goes like this:

Nearly all the crew let Wendy know they cannot wait
But stoic stand a handful, including the first mate.
Green-eyed Sue before her captain asks to plainly speak her mind:
“It’s sooner I’d lay down my life than leave this ship behind!”

“A simple life of growing up is surely not for me.
Working as a sailor’s been the first time I am free.
So by your leave dear Captain, I will be a pirate still
And carry on the legacy of our Red-handed Jill!”

See the rest of the Wendy Trilogy lyrics and listen the Ms. Tucker’s amazing voice singing. You can also buy the entire album, Sirens, for the whole trilogy and an assortment of other amazing bardic tales.
